Unit 60 – trailer planner (week by week)

Within this, I am going to recreate and layout a detailed brief of the work that was produced each week by our group (Ryan, Tarek, Jonae) and how we reached the final outcome of our trailer.

Introduction

To begin with, the first few weeks was aimed at us producing the skeleton on our game trailer, we brainstormed and changed ideas, but throughout all the brainstorming came to the conclusion that to achieve a distinction we must produce an idea that is attainable and fits with the criteria of a game trailer. Here are the results.

Week 1

11 December

  • Lewis pitches an idea and organises class into groups me being in a group of three.
  • Immediately we start brainstorming potential ideas of what we can produce, the ideas are as followed, Star wars,  and rocket league
  • After narrowing it down we chose Star wars, due to its creative fluidity, we could obtain probs easy as well as come up with a solid storyboard and build from it

12 December

  • Under much collaboration and discussion we all came to accord that star wars may have been too ambitious, as we would have to implement a lot of effects to create something remotely linked to star wars and as that’s not what the brief was assessing us on we decided to scrap the Idea and go for a more approachable suggestion which was Street fighter X Yakuza.
  • Once coming up with the ideas we instantly got to work allocating specific roles to each group member, Jonae being the storyboard artist, Ryan being the editor and me being the theory writer Documenting each week’s progress as well as finalising locations and paperwork. We all collaborated to be Director, cameraman as we all had amazing creative approaches to the project and felt collaborating those ideas as a unit was the best approach to a successful outcome.

13 December

  • Today we being choreography of our piece, Since our project was based of a mixed martial arts game we sort it best fit to add a sight sequence within our trailer. IN keeping to the time frame we didn’t expect the scene to be to long however we knew we could add alot of interesting and unique shots in what little time we had.
  • We grabbed a camera and began practicing outside the college, just getting a visual interpretation of how each movement would look like as well seeing what angles work best with particular sequences. Once done we were happy to have a rough recording of how the fighting scene would be framed

18 December

The following days leading up to the 18th was a mixture of communicating and adding more ideas for our trailer. We decided to make a group outside of college n snapchat to enable us to be in communication 24/7 giving input or adding constructive information when need be, due to this key coordination it enabled us to really work as a solid unit and never quarrel about clashing ideas. As well as brainstorming and adding more ideas we delegated locations. We each had different ideas on where we wanted to film our trailer,  we had a few locations in mind such as Richmond park, however, ended up with shooting in Wimbledon park in a secluded woodland area. We chose to have our main scene to be shot in the woods as it fit with the overall theme of our trailer, As we had an important action scene to shoot we thought a secluded area could best capture this.

The last Location within the trailer included Ryan’s house as we needed a realistic home environment to highlight the contrast between make-believe and real life.

19th December

during the holiday we decided to get together and film, we wanted to do it early on in the holiday to get a head start from everyone else to enable us to have time to fine-tune and edit the scene when the time arose.

The night before we communicated that we would all meet with ur probs at the location by 12:45 which was achieved, upon arrival we set up our scene as well as the camera and began filming, the whole process lasted 3- 4hours not including reshoots. Within this time there was alot of decsion to take into account such as camera angles, distance, lighting and continuity, since we faced a challenging task of choreography a fight scene we needed all angles to be shot well and precise, as well as this we used different angles to make punches seem more realistic on camera again adding to the whole effect. As stated before since we all decided to direct the whole experience of filming was a joy as we incorporated a little bit of our own individual style to the scene as a whole and that will definitely be an aspect that will be noticed when viewed.

21st December

Although we had the bulk of our fighting scene shot on the 19th we decided not return back to Wimbledon to take some reshoots, the reasoning behind this was that some science were either blurry, not to a high enough standard or were scrapped as a whole. The reshoots took 2 hours as a whole and by the end, we were ready to edit.

22nd December

By Tuesday we had our main scene compress and ready to edit so thats what we focused on, as a team we would give points and collaboration to where scene should go as well as how the lighting should be, Ryan taking on hoard these implements suggested his own ideas and  began organising and bringing life to the scene, using tools such as special effects taken from websites or correct editing and specific times this scene was really starting to take shape,  Lastly the chosen software that was used was aftereffects as it was taught to us all last year thus making it the most familiar software to use.

29th December

The days following the 29th was spent editing and sharing feedback with each other just honing what we have already produced. Now that we had our main scene edited we decided to use the facilities of the college and record are sound effects in a soundproof room giving us full advantage of different ranges. During our session we recorded a magnitude of sounds from kicks to punches to grunts and much more, everything you hear in the trailer is original and produced by us. Once complete it was a simple method of just implementing those sounds to garage band and tinkering with them, adding reverb or playing with the EQ.

1st February

We still had one extra scene to film which was the scene to end the trailer and as mentioned before would be filmed in Ryan’s house. In keeping with that we decided to meet up on the weekend and finish up the trailer with the ending scene. Unlike before This scene was much easier to film as it was not in the open and we were shooting in a controlled environment, not having to worry about passing people. Once complete we imported it on Aftereffects and began combing it with the rest of the trailer, Now all we had to do was finish editing the end scene and add all the sound that was recorded.

5th February

The days following the 5th was the rest of the editing being completed and polished, once done post production was our main priority, We spend this lesson fine tuning the whole trailer making sure there were no errors to be seen as well as cutting unnecessary parts, We new continuity was a big factor into this project so checking that the lighting was seamless was also a huge priority. To conclude we added the sound from garage band into our trailer and made sure that the sound didn’t clash with the video.

Health assessment

throughout all the locations our top priority was safety and making sure there were no hazards that would interfere with the wellbeing of our health, some examples of  the safety measure  taken are the following

  • Removed any sharp objects from the ground giving us a clear surface area to act
  • Kept constant communication with family members in case of an emergency
  • Bringing first aid equipment such as bandages and disinfectant to the scene incase an accident surpassed.

Locations

Even better if

A constant error we had with are trailer once receiving feedback was how long it was, even after trimming the trailer there were many scenes that should and could of been shorter if we cut them, if I were to improve on this trailer I would cut these long  scenes making the trailer look more fluid and straight to the point.

Conclusion

To conclude as a group we found this project to be very educational as well enjoyable. We learned Practical skills such as communication, teamwork and compromising, as well as theoretical and technical skills such as  adding visual effects to videos in an effective way ,As well as organising work flow to make our progress look presentable. Off course there were minor issues that weren’t attended to such as not being fully equipped when coming to filming as there were times where the camera died, and we had no way to film, in saying that those experiences were rectified and we learnt form our mistakes being better prepared for the near future. overall we have had a very positive outlook from this project.

Location for Filming Game trailer. (group work)

During the Christmas break, we did some research into locations for filming our live-action trailer, the locations we researched were Richmond, Merton, and Wimbledon Common. We decided to go for Wimbledon common, but before we came to this conclusion. We went to Wimbledon to scout out areas in the park to make sure it had the characteristics which would suit the feel we were going for. We came to the Conclusion that here is where we were going to film, the pictures below are the evidence of going to the place as well as reference images for us, so we remember what the area looked like. we also pinpointed the location on the application “Google Maps”

Game trailer concept cover title idea.

Game Trailer Concept Art

Here is a basic draft of the logo/ title that will appear at the end of the game trailer, I created this draft by using illustrator, as this is only a draft it is ok for me to use vector based images, which I had originally sourced from google, did an image trace, and removed all the white areas but left the black outlines, I then highlighted certain parts of the character in red, for example i made Ryu’s arm red, Majima’s bat red and Akuma’s hair, this is because the things highlighted is like a trademark characteristic that a fan of either series will always notice first. I decided to go for the effect of a spray painted logo as the name is a streetfighter, it could be advertised on the streets, as street-fighting is a rebellious act which would not be entirely legal, the same as graffiti so I decided to link those too meanings.streetfighterx yakuza.png

Development trailer ideas (group)

Starwars

Before coming up with a concrete idea our group had a few ideas of what our game trailer would be. At first, we were going to produce a live-action trailer linked with straw stars. Naturally, as star wars are linked with sci-fi we were limited as a group to our budget. We eventually realized this and thought that it wouldn’t be possible to showcase a true outstanding star wars trailer, with the current budget.

If we were to excel with this certain idea we would have to shoot a scene between a sith and a Jedi. This scene would be shot using extreme close-ups and different dynamic angles showcasing the dynamic urgency of the dual. In addition to this, we would also have fast cuts to amplify the sense of movement as the two warriors dual.  The scene would of most likely been shot in the dark as of course lightsabers are not real and shooting at daytime would hinder the bright effect of the laser sword.  It would most likely be scened in a building or private area secluded from people.

The soundtrack for this piece would, of course, include iconic songs created by the amazing John Williams. An example very from dual of the fates, imperial march and much more. There really isn’t much explanation needed for why these songs would be included.

The Characters included within the trailer would be Obi-Wan and kylo ren. we chose this as both characters come from different eras showcasing the continuity with the Battlefront game. The whole idea of the game is that players can play who they want when they want, we wanted to showcase this feature within our trailer, as well as broeading our audience to a wider variety of fans. As its a film we would need various probs like lightsaber models. Jedi/Sith robes and if need replica helmets.

Street fighter x Yakuza

As a group we decided that the Star Wars idea was perhaps too ambitious, however, we wanted to stick true to the action-packed trailer with intense combat. So for that reason, we finalized on another idea we came up with collectively, which was a street fighter live action trailer for the Nintendo switch. We mainly decided upon this due to the idea developed for this trailer is a lot more grounded, realistic and most importantly achievable to an exceptional standard.

The concept for this trailer will be primarily based upon the two main staple characters of the street fighter franchise: Ryu and Akuma. The theme of the trailer will stick true to the roots of the franchise, it will depict a brutal battle between the two showing a strong, long burning rivalry. The trailer will eventually transition into reality panning the camera outwards from a Nintendo switch screen showing the iconic street fighter gameplay as it shows that all along two players have been playing against one another. This is to highlight the competitive aspect of the fighting game genre and what has carried it to the heights it has reached in today’s age. Finally, we will have a tease at the end. The camera will be panning up from smart dress shoes following a cry out of “Yo!” The camera will switch between a series of close-ups slowly revealing the special guest character of the game: Majima from the Yakuza game franchise.  The two fighters will be shown staring down the new challenger approaching in a wide shot with a great composition of all three fighters. The trailer will end out with a close up of Majima speaking in his native tongue of Japanese to the fighters challenging them; followed by quick extreme close-ups of each character giving out a battle cry as they charge to one another.

For the soundtrack, we will most likely be looking at a mix between an exciting, intense record to match the frequency of the trailer, which is going to be a feeling of competition, companionship which will be seen in the hot of the two players playing on the Nintendo and surprises at the end. So I believe we will end up using a mixture of tracks or a track we feel is most suitable once we enter production, for now here are some tracks we believe have the best feel for the trailer concept.

As this concept is much more grounded and achievable in terms of the character being human for the most part with no real science fiction descent we can comfortably film the majority of the trailer in a forest/woods area. Costumes will be very simple with basic karate Gis for the Street Fighter characters and a suit for Majima. The only real challenge will be the special effects implemented within the trailer to give the full effect of this being a fight taking place in the street fighter universe with iconic attacks such as Hadouken and a dynamic health bar. These effects can be created within after effects with the use of green screen and an eye for precision. We want a very bright atmosphere in terms of lighting as the street fighter series is not dark at all, in fact, it is renowned for being the lighter counterpart to their rival fighting franchise Mortal Kombat. The camera shots will have to be very precise to keep a stable overall look in the midst of the choreographed combat. For the most part, we will use close-ups, extreme close-ups and some wide shots here and there.

Film noir- evaluation

Introduction

Within this evaluation, I will discuss everything we as a group struggled and went through to ultimately reach our end goal of a finished product. That was Film Noir.

Process

we were instructed to split into groups of 3-4 peers, once grouped up we were given a brief and a scene to film/produce. the idea was that between the class there were 4 groups and 4 scenes. That means each group was given a scene that when complete would eventually join up to be one short film. Now that we were separated in our groups we delegated roles to each other. someone would be the actor, someone would control the camera and so on. as a group, we collectively agreed and delegated roles to each enabling us to now start filming. Now that we decided to start filming we had to first find and pick a scene to shoot our story. after a couple of failed ideas and spots we finally collectively came up with areas located around the college that would hold our environmental scene. In total, we had three different environment scenes around the college that being the corridor, Elevator and finally the rooftop. Now that we had are locations we began with filming. Our first couple of takes ran fairly smoothly. The cameraman took many different video angles testing which angles would fit best for which seen, For example, when I was instructed to walk up a tight staired corridor The cameraman decided to choose a close-up angle focusing more on my character movements then the environment itself. We repeated this process for each scene in each location. As well as this although we all had different roles we each contributed and shared ideas on how and where we can film, as well as how I should act. When our filming came to an end we agreed that we produced a product that we were pleased with. We made sure to stay loyal to the brief exploring different angles and perspective as well as adding our own individual ideas to the project.

Roles

As I mentioned before as a group of 4 we had to agate roles to each group member. I decided to be the actor, so my task was to act out the scenes and follow the director’s instructions. Ryan was the cameraman/2nd director. He was in charge of the camera, suggesting and creating many unique and creative angles that would further mold our film. He occasionally filled in as the director if our director was absent. Janae was our lead artist/designer. He was in charge of all the concept as well as a storyboard. Obviously, we all gave our input and contributed however the bulk of the ideas were his. And finally, our final member Patrick was the director. He would help map out our locations as well as instruct me what to do and when to do it.

Conclusion

To concludes I am proud of the final product I and my group produced. `Through our actions we followed the brief accordingly and worked well with each other aiding and listening to one another, giving advice when needed.  This demonstration of good work ethic can be represented through the trailer that was produced.
